The newest member of the team, Jack is your host every Saturday night on the Rebel Rock N' Blues show.
Being a child of the 60`s, I was a fed a staple diet of Elvis Presley/Joe Cocker & Janis Joplin thanks to my dad which is probably where my love of the blues comes from, my dad`s love of these artists led me to experiment with people like Pat Travers, Robin Trower & Frank Marino, growing up thru the 70`s I was exposed to all the Glam Pop/Rock of Sweet & T. Rex and their ilk, but it wasn`t until 1974 at the age of 11 that I first heard Mott The Hoople and from then on I was totally hooked on this Rock n Roll thing, in the words of Marc Bolan , (Ian Hunter) "he ain't no square with his corkscrew hair "(and shades)
I felt like I had found something that belonged to me, instead of listening to either my dads music or the pop music on Radio 1 I had my own thing and I totally immersed myself in the world of Rock & Metal from that point on, but after the great period for Rock thru the 70`s & 80`s , we all know things began to change a little in style around the beginning of the 90`s & at this point I became very disillusioned with the way Rock music was heading and my heart just wasn`t in to pushing the Grunge movement, the final straw came when Hull's best Rock Venue "The Trog Bar" had a face lift, name change and went all trendy under the new name of Lasers, it wasn`t long before there was a change in music policy & the rockers began to drift away
It was at this point I decided to take a break from the whole scene and never really considered returning, plus at this time I had just bought a house & was also starting a family, so all my time was taken up with being responsible for a change. However, it wasn`t long before I began to miss the music and the wild nights , there were still some great bands around making great music but nobody was promoting this in Hull or anywhere else in the region for that matter. I made contact with a few of the old Rock venues around Hull with a view to bringing back another Classic/Melodic Rock Night, but they were only interested in Rock Nites if they were Alternative/ Nu Metal , which is something I have no love for and wasn`t interested in doing, so all plans were put on the back burner again, until that is late 2001 early 2002 when I felt there was enough of a swing back to the Melodic style of Rock for me to make another attempt
This is when I decided to contact The White Room, a local Rock Venue with a great reputation that had just changed ownership and as luck would have it the new owner was an old Rocker himself being well into NWOBHM in the late 70`s early 80`s and he was all for bringing Rock & Metal back to Hull, so this is where the ball started rolling again. Since that time we have seen the attendance at these nights continue to grow, proving beyond all doubt that there is indeed a call for this type of event locally, since the rebirth at The White Room I have moved around a little for various reasons and taken in a few venues in and around the town centre before settling at Ringside & Welly Club both in the Bevereley Road area of Hull which is also close to the town centre.
After a while I hit on the idea of the Hull Rockers Forum/Website (www.hullrockers.co.uk) to help with promotion of the nights, give local rockers a place to discuss their passion and also keep us all informed of what was going on in and around Hull/Yorkshire as well as Nationally and Internationally. The forum is now 2yrs old, has almost 400 users now and is growing all the time, bringing old friends back together and continually bringing in new friends
The forum is where I met my friend Ian who handles Security for the Sweden Rock Festival and working along side Ian as Stage Security has become another sideline for me each summer, which is something I love to do. Anybody that hasn`t experienced SRF is really missing out, it is, without doubt, one of the best festivals I`ve ever attended
I have been a long time listener/contributor to ARfm, in fact I was there on day one in Nov 2004 and now with this new opportunity as presenter another chapter has started in my life and I am able to bring my first love in music Blues Rock/Southern Rock to the listeners, which is something I'm very excited about. I look forward to long partnership with ARfm, which is undoubtedly THE best Rock Radio station out there
